Meet the team

Joe Watkins

Joe holds a PhD in Mathematics and lectured in the subject for many years, where he built a strong reputation as both an educator and innovator in public engagement with STEM. He ran many local and national outreach programmes in mathematics and science, working with organisations such as the Royal Institution, Maths Hubs and STEMnet.


He has since led major AI initiatives, including serving as AI Strategy & Solutions Lead for a large adult education provider, where he designed and delivered large-scale rollouts of AI tools and worked closely on workforce engagement and upskilling. He regularly gives talks on Leadership with AI, tailored to audience needs, which consistently receive excellent feedback.


Previously, Joe directed national data programmes, integrating generative AI into learning design and content creation to improve efficiency and personalisation. He is particularly motivated by work with not-for-profit organisations and has also supported the professional development of teachers in AI, with consistently excellent feedback from participants.

Ben Mitchell

 Ben is a doctoral researcher in mathematics with teaching experience across secondary, university, and applied assessment contexts in data and AI. He holds a PGCE and has taught learners aged 11–18 and at university level.


Ben has been actively involved in outreach and widening participation—supporting students through the STEP programme, contributing to Royal Institution masterclasses, and mentoring learners navigating the transition to higher education.


Professionally, Ben works as an End Point Assessor for Level 3 Data Technician apprenticeships and is preparing to assess Level 7 AI-related standards, keeping him connected to real-world data practice and the evolving role of AI in the workforce. He also brings consultancy experience and is involved in using AI for content creation, with a focus on audience tailoring—exploring how generative tools can adapt material for different learners and contexts.


Beyond formal education, Ben has over a decade of experience in fencing, including coaching and committee roles. His focus throughout is on helping people build confidence with new skills.
